  Crime Scene Photographer?
Official Photographer announced!

It has recently been announced that an official photographer will be present during the Ripper Conference at the Kings Stores in London later this year.

Gail Dowle will be taking snapshots of the entire weekend and hopefully, these will be made available via the Conference organisers on CD after the event! This is great news for those wishing to obtain a memento of their time at a Ripper Conference, and stops the need for attendees to take their own cameras, although I will be taking mind to capture pre and post Conference events!!

Photography and Jack the Ripper seem to go hand in hand, from the crime scene photo’s and work of Lamoureux and Lacassagne, to more recently the sterling work in the East End by Robert Clack and John Bennett. These pictures are an important part of the case, and as they say “Paint a thousand words

I am sure everyone will be on there best behaviour....

Daniel Olsson DVD Exclusive!

It has also been announced, that Daniel Olsson’s full length DVD feature, WILL be available from the Ripper Conference! It was initially expected that only the promo would be available, but it appears that the full length documentary will be on sale, exclusively, and earlier than it’s general release in 2010!

The feature looks at Daniel’s research into Elizabeth Stride’s origins, and his research has been gaining positive reviews throughout the Ripper Community.

As a collector of Ripperana and Documentaries, this is already making me quite excited, as it will, I am sure, others who will be attending!
It just seems to get more and more exciting by the week!

  Speakers Announced
This week see’s the announcement of two speakers specifically discussing Elizabeth Stride.

Elizabeth Stride-The Beginning.

The first will be Daniel Olsson on Elizabeth Stride - the Beginning, which is an exclusive showing of his DVD featuring all his research into Elizabeth Stride’s early days and birth in Sweden.
This is exclusive research material and has previously been featured in Ripperologist magazine, but a live action DVD sounds impressive. The DVD will be a promo of a full feature length documentary which will be available from 2010, with the promo available for purchase at the conference.

The promotional campaign for the feature length DVD will see conference Organisers Adam Wood and Andy Aliffe, travelling to Gothenburg, to assist Daniel Olsson!

Elizabeth Stride-The End.

The second speaker will be Philip Hutchinson on the Dutfield's Yard photo, which he'll be showing and exploring its origins. The photo was presented late last year at the Ripper Conference in Knoxville, USA, and it has caused controversy within the Ripper Community, with camps arguing over it’s provenance. This will be the first time it has been shown to a large audience in the UK!

Philip Hutchinson has been working closely with several experts in trying to ascertain the origins and provenance of not just this photo, but the collection it came with, and has been working on a book to showcase his research efforts, in securing this unique photograph.

I have always followed Elizabeth Stride’s early life with interest, and cannot wait to see Daniel’s multimedia presentation of her origins, and I am sure I am not alone in this.
I am also quite excited to see the Dutfield’s Yard photo, as I only managed a brief viewing of the image, when Philip kindly posted the picture on Ripper Casebook several months ago.

Week 3- Planes, Trains and Automobiles!
How are you getting there?
I have thought this over quite a lot in recent weeks, and I checked online travel companies for tickets to London in October, but the problem for me is deciding on how to get there.

Buses
National Express are offering great deals financially, but travelling times are quite high, which is understandable given that driving into London is no mean feat. Wherever you are in mainland Britain, you should be able to get a National Express Coach, but check their website before making any arrangements.

http://www.nationalexpress.com/

Trains
Train tickets are a little more expensive but the travel time is 4 hours less at just 2 hours direct from Hull! It would be cheaper if I travelled over night, but what I save on Train Fare, I spend on a Hotel!

Automobiles
As I don't drive, I am unsure of the travelling times and fuel costs involved in a trip to London, but if you are travelling by car, ensure you plan your route, and more importantly, check with your hotel if there is parking, and how much it costs. The last thing we want is for people to get stranded in London....

It might also be advantageous to see if other people locally are attending, perhaps offering a car sharing scheme, which will lessen the financial load, and give you a little company on the way down.

Planes
I know a couple of people who are travelling over on Plane for the Conference, and there are several airports in London, all of which take International Flights.

A discussion on local airports can be found here,
http://forum.casebook.org/showthread.php?t=2214

London offers a wide range of local transport, from Taxis, to Buses, and the Tube, I will find out details of these and post them at a later date, to allow you to plan ahead.

The clock is ticking!

Remember, anyone interested should email mail@ripperconference.com to allow organisers to arrange places.

Week 2-The Host with the Most!
Hosting and MC-ing a Ripper Conference is a big deal, you must strike the right comical tone, whilst paying strict attention to the subject matter, which often proves to be an emotional tightrope. Not many can pull this off, but one of the greatest hosts, if not the greatest, to ever stand in front of the conference delegates was Mr. Jeremy Beadle.

Now I never actually saw Jeremy live, but over the years have been witness to several recordings and the word of mouth in the forums, and Jeremy was admired and respected throughout. He managed to find the right middle ground, which for those watching, was both entertaining and poignant.

Sadly, with Jeremy passing away last year, this massive void has been left open, and it requires someone special to fill that space....

Enter Colin Cobb, a tour guide who presents a Titanic tour, a pro singer and entertainer!
It's going to be a tough job, but I am sure Colin is capable of turing this conference into something special.

Confirmed so far!

Conference to take place 24 and 25 October

Venue: The King's Stores, Widegate Street

Phil Hutchinson will lead a unique 2 hour Ripper tour

There are two speakers confirmed as part of a theme, details to be released shortly

Both of these speakers will be presenting material rarely seen, and in the case of one, never!

A unique Ripper film will be shown!

Colin Cobb will take over from the late and lamented Jeremy Beadle ad MC, and will be hosting a DJ set with the opportunity for Karaoke on the Saturday night.

Ripper Conference 2009: What is it all about?
The world of Ripperology is an exciting world, a place where history comes alive, and mysteries are solved daily, whilst new mysteries are presented at an almost equal rate. Over the past year we have seen some excellent developments in the world of Ripperology, the study of the Whitechapel Murders, and the anonymous serial killer known as Jack the Ripper!

Having never been to a Ripper Conference before, I really have no idea what to expect, nor what will be discussed during the presentations, but with so many great finds, books, and audio/visual developments, I am sure there will be plenty on the agenda!

There have been several notable photographic finds in the past year, from Tim Riordan’s Tumblety picture, to Philip Hutchinson’s Berner Street photo, Andrew Spallek’s Druitt collection, and Adam Wood’s Lawende photograph.

Several great books, have appeared recently Jack the Ripper Casebook by Richard Jones, The Worst Street in London by Fiona Rule, The Prince, His Tutor and The Ripper by Deborah McDonald, The Maybrick A-Z by Chris Jones, Elizabeth Stride and JTR by Dave Yost, The Ripper in Ramsgate by Chris Scott and The Fox and the Flies by Charles Van Onselen.

There have also been some fantastic audio/visual developments, from, Jonathon Menges Rippercast, which is a year old all ready! The development of the Ripper Casebook blogs, the Ripper Casebook Wiki, and the JTR Forums Studies, which have all cropped up in the past year!

There was the well publicised Ripper Exhibition at the Docklands Museum, along with the tie in book, by Peter Ackroyd, which helped attract not only the hardcore Ripperologists, but members of the public wishing to take a closer look at the mystery.

Not forgetting the recent TV series, Whitechapel featured in three parts on ITV. The show looked at the possibility of a copycat murderer, lose on the streets and alleyways of Whitechapel. Audience figures reached an average of 8 million a week, and several viewers reported local book stores selling out of ripper related books!
